December Hobby Greenhouses
I like to go outside to my
greenhouse in the middle of winter. I walk from the snow in thru the door
into another world. I would never had enough room in my house to have
all these plant growing, plus I would never be able to control this much
sunlight in my home so I am ecstatic about my greenhouse plants during
the winter months. Going from the cold into the springtime temperatures
is a real rush for me and helps me to cure my cabin fever.
During the cold month of December I have a few days
off from work and I will be doing many of my favorite things in the greenhouse.
During the beginning of the month when the temperatures are cold and the
snow has not yet come I usually start planting more marigolds and bulbs
to keep my greenhouse in use, and to check how well my heat system is
working. After a week or so when I get my heat stabilized and everything
sealed up, I will start planting a few radishes and onions just because
my family likes to eat them so much. I also start planting some potatoes
so that I can start this process as well.
I only use water in the greenhouse when my plants are
dry because I have me greenhouse so well sealed and there is not a lot
of moisture that escapes from my environment.
I have been starting to receive my seed catalogs for
the next season so I am always searching for good deals and fast growing
seeds for use in my greenhouse. I spend a few hours going through the
catalogs. I also make sure I am taking inventory of pots or anything I
need in my greenhouse and I order these items as well while I am ordering
my seeds.
I am cutting back my last crop from my lettuce and
I am thinking about cleaning out these pots so I can start a new crop
in about a month of so. I also have cleaned out the tomatoes that I had
left over from my fall crop as well.
The month of December can be fun because I can involve
the kids in planting bulbs and seeds in the greenhouse without much worry
about how they are going to affect my other plants while they are in the
greenhouse.
Every winter I take a picture of my greenhouse
with the snow about it. During the month of December is when the rain
and ice will come and the area about the greenhouse looks so glimmery
and shiny this is when I like to take my annual photo. Because Christmas
is coming I also do hang Christmas lights from the corners of my greenhouse,
at night when the lights shine off the panels it is like looking at many
lights put together out in my garden!
